  Disability Insurance:
Protecting Income
and Family

The obvious reason for purchasing disability insurance is to provide you and your family with a measure of protection of your work-related income. It is wise to have some sort of plan such as disability insurance in place to protect your family in the case of an emergency resulting in extended leave or a disability suffered that leaves you unable to perform the duties of your job. It is also especially wise to purchase disability insurance in the event that you are the sole income provider for your family.

Although some people don’t consider disability insurance because they work fairly low risk jobs, it is usually always better to err on the safe side where your income and family are concerned. Even people who work eight hour days behind a computer screen can suffer from injuries or be required to take an extended period of leave due to illness. Without a proper protection plan in place, the medical bills, as well as other common bills like utilities and house payments, can quickly add up. If you are not the sole income provider for your family, this places undue pressure on your spouse to make up the difference in wages. Even with working extra hours, your spouse may still be unable to make up the difference. This can be especially hard if you have a large family. On the other hand, the situation is compounded if you are the sole income provider, in which case having no protection plan in place can be disastrous. In such a case, it is quite easy for payments and bills to accumulate, leaving you with a mountain of debt.

If you have a family, and especially if you are its only source of income, it is wise to invest in disability insurance. If your spouse works, he or she should also investigate as to whether purchasing disability insurance is a good decision. There is a wide variety of different policies available with varying amounts of coverage, so investigate which policy is right for you before making this important decision.
