Types of
Disability Insurance
There is a plethora of types of disability insurance available. Choosing which type is right for you depends on your personal preferences and situation, as well as what type of work you do and your own estimate as to how much coverage you will need.
First, you will need to consider how your rates and benefits will be provided to you. You will need to decide when investigating which type to purchase if you would like your insurance policy to be non-cancelable and guaranteed renewable, simply guaranteed renewable, or conditionally renewable. Of course which of the three you choose will depend upon whether or not the cost of the policy is a pertinent issue to you. However, most insurance specialists agree that purchasing a non-cancelable contract is the best type of policy to have. This way, your rates and benefits are set in place, and the insurance company cannot make any changes to them without your request. The second kind of insurance, the guaranteed renewable policy, is a step down. In this type of policy, your company cannot simply drop you from your coverage, but they have the right to raise prices for whatever reason they see fit. The third type of coverage is even less desirable, as companies can place any type of condition on these policies or can raise rates at any time.
The best type of disability insurance to have is a policy that covers total disability as own-occupation disability. This type of coverage appeals to many workers today. Most workers who are disabled enough to not be able to perform the full duties of their current job can still receive the benefits of disability insurance even if they choose to perform other tasks. For example, many people who suffer from a disability choose to work in a less risky venture or to perform simple duties such as working in a small shop. In this scenario, these workers can still receive disability insurance without being penalized for receiving another form of income. The other range of the spectrum is any-occupation disability, which will not provide coverage to anyone who is disabled unless they are not working at any other job. This is a less desirable form of insurance. You can also choose between full and partial policies.
Certainly, the different types of insurance available can be confusing, and one type is not for everyone. However, it is best when deciding which type to purchase to consult a lawyer or other insurance professional, as they can best explain how each different type may or may not work for you.
