  Working on Disability

Unfortunately, sustaining an injury or illness that results in a disability is something that many workers will experience in their lifetime. Living with a disability and being unable to perform your previous work duties to the fullest can be emotionally devastating to many employees who were previously able bodied. Many disabled workers, therefore, are choosing to venture out and to work with their disabilities.

Many workers suffer from a disability that is not completely debilitating. While they are not able to perform to the fullest at their previous jobs, they are still sound enough to be able to perform some work duties. Many workers suffering from disabilities choose to get a different, more accommodating job in order to fill the void left by being unable to work in their previous jobs. Working also provides those with a disability with a sense of purpose and self worth. Having a job while being disabled can really make a big difference in a person’s outlook on life and hopes for the future.

However, if you are going to work while on disability insurance coverage, there are a couple of things you will need to keep in mind. First, it is extremely important to investigate what type of insurance you have. The best and most desirable kind of insurance to have in this situation would be own-occupation disability. This type of insurance will continue to pay out benefits even if the receiver chooses to get another job. So, if you decide you want to spend a few hours each day working at a local shop, you will not be penalized for working, and your benefits will remain the same. However, if you have a different type of insurance—for example, any-occupation disability—you will need to be extremely careful about the guidelines of your policy. This type of policy will not provide any payout or benefits at all if you are working another job or any job at all.

Fortunately, with a proper disability coverage plan, you can sometimes work while receiving benefits because of a loss of income from your previous job. However, check to make sure your plan allows for this, because you do not want to lose your benefits for working a few hours a week at a different job.
